Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier believes he is currently playing his best football and deserves to be considered for selection by England manager Gareth Southgate. Dier left Tottenham Hotspur after 10 years in January to join the Bundesliga club and has not featured for England since the 2022 World Cup.

Speaking on Sky Bet’s The Overlap podcast, Dier expressed his desire to be part of the England squad, stating, “I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I’m that level of a player.” However, he admitted that he has not had any conversations with Southgate about his international future.

The 30-year-old earned his England debut in 2015 and has accumulated 49 caps, with 37 of them coming as part of the starting XI. Dier has made 10 appearances for Bayern Munich and will feature in their Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal.

Dier credited his improved form to the arrival of manager Antonio Conte at Tottenham, stating, “I’m playing the best football of my career since Conte came (to Tottenham) and I’ve carried it on since.” He emphasized that age is not a factor in determining his performance, claiming, “People think that I’m 37 or something, but I’m 30 years-old and am nowhere near the end of my prime.”

Reflecting on his former Tottenham colleagues, Dier mentioned players like Mousa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, and Hugo Lloris, who were playing their best football in their early thirties. Dier expressed his belief that his prime years are still ahead of him.

Dier concluded by mentioning, “When I look around the players I’ve played with in my career, like (Mousa) Dembele, (Jan) Vertonghen, (Toby) Alderweireld, (Hugo) Lloris — all these guys, they were 31, 32 and were playing their best football at Tottenham.” He remains optimistic about his future at Bayern Munich and his potential contributions to the England national team.

London-based journalist Martyn Herman reported on Dier’s comments, with the article edited by Hugh Lawson. Dier’s commitment to performing at his best for both club and country highlights his determination to continue making an impact on the football pitch.
