Barcelona women continued their unbeaten run against Real Madrid with a 5-0 victory at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. This win marked their 12th consecutive triumph over their rivals in the ‘Clasico’ matches.
With this result, Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the league standings to six points and maintained their perfect record in the league this season, having won all nine of their games so far. On the other hand, Real Madrid sits in second place with two defeats.
Despite the absence of the injured Alexia Putellas, Barcelona dominated the game. Aitana Bonmati, the Ballon d’Or winning midfielder and women’s World Cup hero, opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 17th minute. Caroline Graham Hansen and Mariona Caldentey also found the back of the net, giving their team a 3-0 lead before the halftime break.
Although Real Madrid managed to prevent further goals in the second half, Barcelona added two stoppage-time goals from Claudia Pina and Vicky Lopez, who set a new record as the youngest goal scorer in a ‘Clasico’ at 17 years old.
Additionally, this victory extended Barcelona’s astonishing home winning streak in the league to 67 games, dating back to February 2019.
