In a recent development, it has been confirmed that Steve Corica will be the inaugural coach of the new A-League team based in Auckland. This announcement comes just six weeks after Corica was terminated from his position with Sydney FC, a team that has won the championship five times.
Corica had achieved back-to-back championships with Sydney FC in 2019-20 but was let go due to a disappointing start to the most recent season. Now, he will be collaborating with Terry McFlynn, the team’s recently appointed director of football and a former team mate from Sydney FC, to construct the club’s roster before they make their debut in the Australian top flight during the 2024/25 season.
Bill Foley, the billionaire owner of the Auckland team, praised Corica as a “proven winner” both as a player and head coach. Foley emphasized that Corica’s coaching philosophy aligns with the club’s goals of success and providing entertaining experiences for the fans.
A notable aspect of this development is that Auckland will be joining Wellington Phoenix as one of the two New Zealand teams in the A-League for the first time. Currently, Wellington Phoenix lead the table eight games into the season.
