(Reuters) – England’s Alex Greenwood suffered a head injury during their Women’s Nations League match against Belgium on Tuesday. She was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and will undergo assessment at her club, Manchester City, according to a statement on Wednesday.
Greenwood collided with Belgium’s Jassina Blom in the 19th minute of the game, which England lost 3-2. She received medical attention on the field for twelve minutes before being stretchered off. Blom, on the other hand, continued playing with a bandage around her head.
“Alex Greenwood will return to the City Football Academy for further medical assessments after sustaining a head injury on international duty,” City stated.
“We can confirm she has been carefully monitored, is alert and well, and will return home later today ahead of a review with our medical team.”
England manager Sarina Wiegman provided an update on Greenwood’s condition after the match in Leuven.
“She’s fine, I haven’t spoken to her yet. I also haven’t spoken to the doctor yet, but I heard she’s walking around,” Wiegman said.
“Obviously she has a concussion, but it’s good news that she’s walking around and doing fine.”
Manchester City, currently leading the Women’s Super League after four games, will face Arsenal on Sunday.
