In a recent development, Ajdin Hrustic, once a key player for Australia in the lead-up to the last World Cup, has faced setbacks due to injury and club issues in the past two years, leading to a limited presence on the field. However, the 27-year-old made a comeback as a substitute during Australia’s 2-0 qualifying win over Lebanon, aiding the team in their pursuit of a sixth consecutive appearance at the World Cup finals.

Reflecting on his return, Hrustic expressed his joy, stating, “Feels great. It’s been a long time, I’ve missed it and felt good to be back home, out on the pitch with the boys and to get three important points.”

Having endured an ankle injury prior to the last World Cup, Hrustic’s participation in the tournament was restricted to brief appearances as Australia progressed to the last 16. Despite this, his determination to assist Australia in reaching the 2026 finals in United States, Mexico, and Canada remains steadfast.

“I think I’ve still got unfinished business with the World Cup,” he affirmed. “I went through a difficult period with an injury where I forced myself to play and I did what I could, but unfortunately it didn’t work out as I wished.”

As a Europa League champion with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022, Hrustic faced challenges with injuries and limited playtime at Italian club Hellas Verona, resulting in his exclusion from the squad for the Asian Cup earlier this year. His recent return to international football followed a transfer back to Dutch club Heracles Almelo, where he initiated his professional career.

Expressing the significance of his move, Hrustic emphasized, “It was a very important step for me and I thought about how and what was best for my career and what’s best for myself and it came late, the move, but it was one that I think was worth waiting for.”

A fully fit Hrustic would be a valuable asset for Australia, especially considering their struggle to score goals under coach Graham Arnold. While his goal-scoring record may not be extensive, his ability to unlock defenses and create opportunities for his teammates is well-established.

“I love getting on the ball,” he affirmed. “I love giving the final pass, I love assisting the boys, I love seeing the strikers work so hard and then I do what I can, use my quality so I try what I can to make others happy and also myself.”

Overall, Hrustic’s return to form signifies a positive development for Australia as they aim to strengthen their midfield and offensive capabilities in the upcoming competitions. With his skill and determination, Hrustic’s presence is expected to bring a renewed energy to the team as they continue their journey towards the World Cup finals.
