(Reuters) – Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp commended Brighton & Hove Albion coach Roberto De Zerbi on Friday for his demanding yet entertaining style of play, which he has implemented successfully in his 18 months at the club. Klopp admitted that he could never set his own teams up to play in a similar manner.

De Zerbi took over as Brighton coach in September 2022 and led the team to their best-ever finish of sixth place in the Premier League, earning them a spot in Europe for the first time last season.

Liverpool, who will face Brighton on Sunday, were actually the first team De Zerbi faced when he took charge, resulting in a 3-3 draw. Since then, Brighton has never lost to Klopp’s side.

“We are going for the three points, that is clear. But we are aware of the challenge Brighton presents. Roberto has done an incredible job there, and it’s always a different game against them,” Klopp told reporters.

“When Roberto first arrived, we were unsure of what to expect. It was impressive how quickly he got the team playing his way. Their performance has only improved since then.”

Brighton is known for dominating possession and their effective pressing game has caused problems for many opponents. De Zerbi’s team has scored 10 goals against Liverpool in their four meetings in all competitions.

“Their style of play revolves around possession. We need to have more possession than in our recent games against them. Their pressing disrupts our rhythm, so we need to find a way to counter that,” Klopp added.

“The way Brighton plays is not something I could coach. It doesn’t align with my personality, but it’s enjoyable to watch. It puts a lot of demands on the players… They are capable of beating any team on their day. However, we are also capable of that.”

Despite Liverpool having several injured players, Klopp expressed uncertainty regarding the availability of midfielder Curtis Jones for the upcoming match. Left back Andy Robertson’s situation will be monitored day by day, while forward Darwin Nunez is fit after recovering from a hamstring issue.

Liverpool is currently tied with Arsenal at the top of the table with 64 points, with Manchester City just one point behind. The title race remains open with 10 games left in the season.

“It’s a tricky situation and everyone needs luck with injuries. We have faced challenges in that aspect, but hopefully our players will return soon. We need them back. The key is finding a way to secure the victory,” Klopp explained.

“We have found a playing style that suits us. Before the international break, we showcased some of our best football against Manchester City and Manchester United.

“During those games, we played some excellent football. Now, we are back and ready for the next challenge.”
