(Reuters) – Surprise LaLiga leaders Girona were disappointed after being held to a goalless draw by bottom side Almeria on Sunday and finishing the game with 10 players as Aleix Garcia was given a straight red card late in the second half.
On Sunday, with Real Madrid playing in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona in Saudi Arabia, Girona returned to the top of the standings with 49 points, one ahead of second-placed Real and eight clear of third-placed Barca.
Girona managed to hold slightly more than 55% of possession, but they lacked creativity and barely posed a threat to their opponents, only managing one shot on target throughout the entire game.
They were fortunate to secure a point in a game where a wasteful Almeria were the better team but failed to score.
