Leicester City and Manchester United faced off in the Women’s Super League, where Leicester earned their first-ever point against Manchester United with a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village. The result sees Leicester with seven points from three games, level with Manchester City and Chelsea at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Manchester United sits in fifth place with five points.
In the 60th minute, Leicester captain Aileen Whelan surprised the hosts by scoring at the far post from a freekick. Leicester had frustrated Manchester United for the majority of the match.
However, just seven minutes later, defender Maya Le Tissier equalized for Manchester United by heading home Katie Zelem’s corner, bringing joy to the home fans.
During the first half stoppage time, Manchester United had two brilliant chances to score. Hinata Miyazawa’s shot hit the crossbar, and Melvine Malard missed the rebound by heading it over the bar.
Before the game, England goalkeeper Mary Earps was recognized for her 100th appearance for Manchester United. Earps had recently made headlines after Nike released her national team replica jersey, which had faced criticism for not being available during the Women’s World Cup. Earps mentioned in an Instagram post that the jersey sold out on the same day it was released.
