(Reuters) – Former Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm believes that Bayer Leverkusen will finally break Bayern’s 11-year dominance and win their first Bundesliga title this year. Lahm, who is now the tournament director for Euro 2024, has been closely following Leverkusen’s impressive unbeaten run this season, which has propelled them to the top of the table with 70 points, 10 points ahead of Bayern.

Lahm expressed his confidence in Leverkusen’s chances, stating, “There are eight games left and a 10-point lead is significant. I believe that Leverkusen will be crowned German champions this season.” He also emphasized the positive impact of having a different team win the title, stating that it adds excitement to the league.

He praised Leverkusen’s performance throughout the season, attributing their success to a combination of skill and luck. Lahm specifically pointed out the influence of Xavi Alonso, the team’s coach, in shaping the players’ roles and strategies.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, who are vying for their 12th consecutive title, will face Borussia Dortmund in a crucial match on Saturday. However, the team has been facing challenges with injuries and the impending departure of coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.

Lahm emphasized the importance of continuity in coaching and management for Bayern, suggesting that finding the right coach is essential for the club’s success. He also hinted at the possibility of returning to work for Bayern in the future.

Despite his potential future involvement with Bayern, Lahm’s current focus is on the upcoming European Championship. He highlighted the need for ensuring the safety and security of fans during the tournament, especially in light of recent events.

Regarding the European Championship, Lahm stated, “Security is our top priority, and we are working closely with the authorities, government, and police to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans. We aim to create a celebratory atmosphere both inside and outside the stadiums.”

The European Championship is set to begin on June 14, with Germany facing Scotland in Group A, which also includes Hungary and Switzerland. Lahm emphasized the importance of proper planning and coordination to host a successful and secure tournament.
