In a historic match on Sunday, Liverpool defeated Manchester United for the first time in the Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory, putting them level with United in the table on points. Meanwhile, Chelsea maintained their position at the top of the table with 25 points after their 3-0 win against Bristol City.
Manchester United are currently sitting in fourth place with 18 points, just ahead of Liverpool on goal difference. The match took an unexpected turn early on when England international Ella Toone scored for Manchester United in the third minute, suggesting a tough game ahead for Liverpool.
However, United’s Millie Turner ended up scoring an own goal while Taylor Hinds netted for Liverpool. Liverpool, who had suffered a 6-0 loss to United less than a year ago, had set a goal for themselves this season of breaking into the WSL’s top four.
Liverpool coach Matt Beard expressed his confidence in the team, stating, “We know we’re a good team. We’re a good group and they are all like friends and family. We need to believe in ourselves. The non-negotiable is the work ethic and we did that. I know on our day we can compete and I think we’ve proven that a few times already this season.”
In the same round of matches, England striker Lauren James, Erin Cuthbert, and Australia international Sam Kerr scored for Chelsea, lifting them three points clear of second-placed Manchester City. Manchester City also secured a victory on Sunday, defeating Everton 4-1 with a hat-trick from Khadija Shaw.
