MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Josko Gvardiol, a player on the Manchester City squad, recalled the last time his team hosted RB Leipzig, a game where Leipzig was trounced by City’s attack, particularly Erling Haaland who scored five goals in a 7-0 rout in the Champions League last 16 in March.
As the two sides meet again in the penultimate round of Group G matches in the competition, Gvardiol, who is now part of City’s defence, does not have to worry about a similar night of misery as he is now Haaland’s teammate.
City, who won the Champions League last season and have a 100% record in the group, is looking to retain the trophy and have made a good start. A point on Tuesday would seal top spot ahead of Leipzig, who are also assured of their place in the knockout phase.
Haaland reached the 50-goal mark in the Premier League in record time at the weekend and Gvardiol expressed admiration for the Norwegian’s performance.
City manager Pep Guardiola may have more defensive options soon with the news that John Stones is close to a return after being out since early November.
Guardiola also emphasized the priority of making sure his side wraps up first place in Tuesday’s game against Leipzig, stating that it is “important to finish first, prestigious and it means the second leg of the last 16 at home.” He also acknowledged that it is not decisive, but provides a little advantage.
