(Reuters) – Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Friday that midfielder James Maddison will not be participating in England’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia due to an ankle injury.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during Spurs’ 4-1 home loss to Chelsea, which also ended Ange Postecoglou’s unbeaten start to the season. Maddison was substituted in the first-half stoppage time after going to the ground without any contact.
Since joining Spurs from Leicester City in June, Maddison has scored three goals and provided five assists in 11 Premier League appearances.
His absence adds to Tottenham’s growing list of injured players, which includes Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Ben Davies, and Manor Solomon.
“We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury,” Spurs announced on X, formerly known as Twitter. “(Maddison) will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.”
With 11 matches played, second-placed Spurs are trailing leaders Manchester City by just one point. They are scheduled to visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
England, meanwhile, will be facing Malta at Wembley next Friday and will then travel to North Macedonia for their Group C fixture three days later.
