Newcastle United have issued a statement denouncing the racist abuse directed at Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock on social media after their team’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
The club emphasized their stance against racism, both in football and society as a whole, stating, “Our message is clear. There is no room for racism in football or society.”
Furthermore, Newcastle United assured that they are providing support to Bruno and Joe, and they will collaborate with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify the individuals responsible for the abuse and ensure appropriate action is taken.
Bruno Guimaraes avoided a booking for a late elbow incident involving Arsenal midfielder Jorginho during a heated and intense game at St James’ Park.
In another contentious moment, Joe Willock was involved in the controversial goal when he managed to keep the ball in play near the corner flag. However, the VAR system was unable to definitively determine whether the ball had completely crossed the boundary line or not.
Following the VAR review, Anthony Gordon’s goal was counted, securing a 1-0 victory for Newcastle United and handing Arsenal their first league defeat of the season.
