Harry Kane, the striker for Bayern Munich, has made a record-breaking transfer to Germany. His goal-scoring performance this season has exceeded expectations, making him an instant fan favorite.
Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in August for a Bundesliga record 100-million-euro fee. The German champions were eager to bring in a proven scorer to fill the gap left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Barcelona last year.
Having hit the ground running, Kane has already scored 21 goals in 15 matches in both the Bundesliga and Champions League for Bayern.
“It is impressive,” beamed Bayern sports director Christoph Freund after Saturday’s double in their 4-2 victory over Heidenheim. He added, “The team also plays him into position. He is a phenomenon.”
Notably, Kane’s two goals on Saturday took his league tally to 17 from 11 games, setting a league record for the most goals at this stage.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel commented, “The performances are telling a story. There is no need for any words.”
Kane has also scored four times in four Champions League group matches, with Bayern having already secured a spot in the knockout stage with two games to spare.
One of the highlights of the season is his 60-metre looping shot from Bayern’s own half in their 8-0 win over Darmstadt 98, widely considered a candidate for goal of the season.
Kane’s scoring exploits have caused some critics of the transfer to make a sharp U-turn, with former Germany international Didi Hamann expressing his surprise at the striker’s effectiveness in the Bundesliga.
“But still it is impressive because he is one of the few strikers who don’t have so much speed. But it shows you how clever he is as a player. Bayern did everything right. He is a phenomenon,” Hamann told Bild newspaper. “($1 = 0.9362 euros) (Reporting by Karolos Grohmann; editing by Clare Fallon)
