(Reuters) – PSV Eindhoven’s perfect start to the Dutch league season came to an end with a 1-1 draw against struggling Utrecht on Sunday. This result also dashed their hopes of breaking their own record for consecutive wins, having won all 17 league matches prior to this game.

Despite taking a seventh minute lead through Johan Bakayoko, PSV could only manage a draw. Belgian midfielder Othman Boussaid scored the equaliser for Utrecht after 53 minutes, marking his first goal of the campaign.

The draw meant that PSV also could not surpass their own record, set in the 1987-88 season, of winning the first 17 games. On that occasion, their streak was also ended by a draw.

“If you look at the entire series it’s still special, but it’s a shame that it’s now over,” PSV coach Peter Bosz said. “It was clearly not good enough and FC Utrecht did an excellent job.”

As a result of this draw, PSV’s lead at the top of the table has been cut to 10 points, following a 2-1 win for second-placed Feyenoord at bottom side Vitesse.
