(Reuters) – Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed the importance of a strong defensive performance and respect for attack-minded opponents Braga in their upcoming Champions League match in Group C. Real Madrid are currently leading the group with two wins from two games. They faced some defensive issues in their last game against Napoli, conceding two goals but ultimately clinching a 3-2 victory thanks to a late own goal by Alex Meret. Braga, who are currently third in the group with three points, also won their last Champions League game with a 3-2 comeback victory against Union Berlin, scoring an added time goal.

Ancelotti acknowledged the significance of winning again after their two previous victories, stating, “It’s an opportunity for us because after two wins it would be good to win again.” He emphasized the need for a strong defensive approach against a team like Braga, who are known for their attacking style of play and goal-scoring abilities. Ancelotti believes that by focusing on defending well, Real Madrid can take advantage of their own individual quality on the field. He further stated, “We have to respect our opponents, who attack and score a lot of goals. It’s a great opportunity to get the group stage off to a good start.”

Ancelotti was asked about Real Madrid’s record in recent seasons, where they have won the Champions League five times but only won LaLiga four times. In response, Ancelotti pointed out that Real Madrid pays special attention to the Champions League as it is a competition they consider highly important. He expressed the club’s fondness for the competition, saying, “It is the one we all like the most: club, players, and coaches. It is a special competition and we have to look forward and not backward.”

In their recent domestic game against Sevilla, Real Madrid faced frustration as they were held to a 1-1 draw and had two early disallowed goals due to contentious refereeing decisions. Ancelotti, visibly frustrated, received a yellow card for complaining. During the press conference, Ancelotti lauded the referee’s decision, mentioning that the referee was right in every decision made. However, he added that he was cautious about voicing his opinion to avoid a suspension.

Ahead of the Champions League match, Ancelotti was questioned about his views on refereeing. He expressed the limitations on his freedom of expression when it comes to referees, stating, “Sometimes we have been wronged, but you know that I don’t have freedom of expression when talking about referees. If I say what I think they suspend me and I want to work and make the most of the matches, which give me emotions.”
