In the lead-up to the semi-final match against Nigeria, South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos stated that his team will look to their previous victory over Morocco for inspiration. The surprise 2-0 win over favourites Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 has filled the team with confidence as they seek to cause another upset.
Broos expressed his happiness and motivation to play in the semi-final, emphasizing that South Africa has now become a strong team. He highlighted the significance of reaching the semi-final, which has not been achieved by the country in over 20 years, and the aspiration to play in the final on Sunday.
He acknowledged the challenge posed by Nigeria, a team with players based abroad, similar to Morocco. Despite Nigeria being considered the favorites, Broos pointed out that football does not always favor the favorite team.
Broos commended the motivation of his players, most of whom are home-based, and highlighted that they have not conceded in their last four games. He expressed his confidence in the players despite doubts raised in South Africa about their capabilities.
The 71-year-old coach, who previously led Cameroon to an unexpected title in 2017, had earlier mentioned the possibility of retirement. However, on Tuesday, he stated that he enjoys his job and football, indicating that he will wait and see what the future holds. He noted that it is natural for someone with a long career like his to start thinking about the end, but he considers it as nothing more than that.
