(Reuters) – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison believes in his quality on the pitch and his self-belief that can help him secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.
Despite having six caps for the national team, the 27-year-old has never played a full 90 minutes. Maddison was sidelined with a knee injury during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, despite being named in the squad.
While he did not feature in England’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil in the international friendlies, he did come on as a substitute in the 74th minute against Belgium. Maddison made an impact by delivering a swift low cross to Jude Bellingham, who scored the equalizer in the 95th minute to secure a 2-2 draw with Belgium at Wembley.
“There is stiff competition and a lot of quality in the squad. I am aware of the quality I possess that can benefit this team,” said Maddison about his chances on Wednesday. “I have confidence and belief in myself to contribute; I just have to deliver… I showed what I am capable of against Belgium, and I aim to show more of that.”
England is placed in a group with Slovenia, Denmark, and Serbia at Euro 2024, commencing on June 14.
