Former Rangers boss Michael Beale has been appointed as the new head coach of Sunderland, replacing Tony Mowbray, the English Championship club announced on Monday.
Mowbray was dismissed by Sunderland after 15 months in charge in early December. While he led the team to the Championship playoffs in his first season, the club’s performance declined with only two wins in the last nine league matches under his leadership.
Beale parted ways with Rangers after their results fell short of expectations this season. The 43-year-old, who used to play for Charlton Athletic, was also part of the coaching set-up at Chelsea and Liverpool academies.
“Beale has signed a contract until summer 2026 at the Stadium of Light and started his role on Monday, returning to coaching two months after leaving Rangers,” Sunderland said in a statement.
Sunderland are currently in seventh place, just outside the playoff positions, and will host Coventry on Saturday.
