On Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Luton Town to boost his team’s chances of finishing in the Premier League’s top four.
Son played a key role in the match, starting and finishing a well-executed move in the 86th minute to snatch the win from Luton in north London.
Luton took an early lead through Tahith Chong, but Son was unlucky to hit the woodwork shortly after. Tottenham equalized with an own goal from Issa Kabore in the 51st minute, before Son sealed the win with a late goal.
After 29 games, Tottenham climbed to fourth place with 56 points, edging out Aston Villa on goal difference. Luton, on the other hand, slipped back into 18th place after their defeat.
Before the international break, Tottenham suffered a 3-0 loss to Fulham. Falling behind to Luton, they were at risk of dropping more points, but Son’s goal turned the game in their favor.
Son scored his 15th league goal of the season, helping him climb to fifth place on Tottenham’s all-time top scorers’ list with 160 goals.
“The three points are crucial for us. We hope to secure victories earlier in matches,” said Son, reflecting on the tough game against Luton. “It was an intense match.”
Spurs had to work hard for the win after Luton took the lead in the third minute through Ross Barkley setting up Chong for a goal past Spurs’ goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Son had a close call when his shot hit both posts before Pape Matar Sarr’s follow-up was cleared off the line, denying Tottenham an equalizer.
Tottenham brought on Brennan Johnson at halftime, and his assist led to Kabore’s own goal. Johnson almost scored himself but was denied by a narrow margin.
Despite Luton’s occasional threats, Spurs kept pushing for a winner, with Son eventually breaking the deadlock by finishing a move initiated in his own half and securing the three points.
“There was some tension, as expected in crucial games like this, but the players remained composed,” said Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, looking ahead to their next match against West Ham United.
