(Reuters) – Vinicius Jr has urged UEFA to take action against Atletico Madrid fans who were reportedly involved in racist chanting ahead of their team’s Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
A video circulating on social media shows Atletico fans outside the Metropolitano stadium in Madrid engaging in racist abuse directed at the Real Madrid forward.
“I hope you’ve already thought about their punishment Champions League, UEFA,” Vinicius posted on social media platform X, raising awareness of the issue.
He expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s a sad reality this happens even at matches I’m not at.”
The talented winger has faced racist abuse in the past, leading to various campaigns both locally and internationally, such as the establishment of a FIFA anti-racism committee.
“If the chants occurred within the stadium or its surroundings, then the disciplinary body will review reports from the match,” a UEFA spokesperson remarked in an email to Reuters.
To show solidarity and support, Brazil is set to confront Spain in a friendly match at the Bernabeu on March 26 as part of an anti-racism initiative in solidarity with Vinicius.
