After suffering a 3-1 home loss to Augsburg, VfL Wolfsburg has made the decision to fire coach Niko Kovac. This defeat marked the team’s third consecutive loss in the league, causing them to drop to 14th place in the Bundesliga standings.
The last time Wolfsburg secured a league victory was on December 16, and they have now endured 11 consecutive Bundesliga matches without a win. This poor run of results ultimately led to the decision to part ways with Kovac.
Marcel Schaefer, the managing director of Wolfsburg, stated, “In our internal review of the defeat against Augsburg and the overall situation, we came to the decision to end our collaboration. We regret this development but regard it as necessary to give the team a new impulse, in order to stabilise the situation.”
Kovac, who previously coached Bayern Munich, took charge of Wolfsburg at the start of the 2022/23 season. In his first season with the club, he guided them to an eighth-place finish in the Bundesliga.
However, the current season has been challenging for Wolfsburg, with the team currently sitting on 25 points, just six points above the relegation playoff spot. Kovac expressed his disappointment, saying, “Of course, I as head coach am particularly disappointed that we haven’t managed to turn things around, despite some promising signs.”
Despite the decision to part ways, Kovac wished the team, the club, and the fans all the best for the remainder of the season and beyond. The search for a new coach to lead Wolfsburg in their quest for improvement will now begin.
