Socialist candidate elected speaker of Spain's lower house of parliament

Spain’s lower house of parliament elected Socialist Francina Armengol as its speaker on Thursday, securing the necessary backing from other parties to form a Socialist-led coalition government. Armengol received 178 votes in favor out of the 350 lawmakers present, with crucial support from the seven lawmakers of Junts per Catalunya, a pro-Catalan independence party.
