The Spanish government has initiated legal proceedings to suspend Luis Rubiales, the chief of the soccer federation, for kissing World Cup star Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s World Cup victory, according to an official statement on Friday.
Rubiales has refused to resign, which has sparked anger among players and government officials who condemn his actions as unacceptable and displaying macho behavior.
“Today, the government has commenced the proceedings, requiring Mr. Rubiales to provide explanations before the Sport Court. If the Sport Court agrees, we will announce the suspension of Mr. Rubiales from his duties,” said Victor Francos, the head of the state-run National Sports Council at a press conference on Friday.
