SHAH ALAM: Selangor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has confirmed its participation in the upcoming Selangor state elections next month. The party will be contesting in nine out of the 56 state seats.

Amanah Chairman Izham Hashim (pic) announced that the party will defend Sabak, Meru, Pandan Indah, Hulu Kelang, Morib, Seri Serdang, Sungai Ramal, and Taman Templer state constituencies, which were previously won by the party in the 14th General Election (GE14).

In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Izham Hashim revealed, “Another seat, Hulu Bernam, has been swapped with Barisan Nasional (BN), and they (BN) took the Jeram seat.”

The selection process for Amanah candidates is currently underway, and the final list of candidates is expected to be finalized today (July 13) by the party’s top leadership.

Izham highlighted, “The committee has finished selecting (candidates), and tomorrow the list will be brought to the top leadership for endorsement. We will announce once it is finalized. The selected candidates must meet certain criteria, including academic qualifications, political experience, and the ability to contribute to the party. Amanah aims to field a balanced mix of new and experienced candidates, representing both the youth and women.”

When asked about the party’s readiness to face competition from Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Selangor, Izham expressed confidence, stating that Amanah believes it can defend at least eight seats in the upcoming polls.

Izham praised Selangor’s stability and prosperity during Amanah’s three terms of service in the state. He emphasized, “There is no reason for voters to switch, especially when we have a proven track record. We have implemented numerous programs for the people, going from dozens to now 46 programs. Additionally, Amanah has maintained a clean reputation, with no involvement in scandals or corruption cases.”

Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari previously announced the distribution of seats between Pakatan and Barisan, with more than 20 percent of the 56 state seats allocated to Barisan. The remaining seats will be contested by Pakatan candidates, including PKR, DAP, and Amanah.

In GE14, Selangor Pakatan secured 51 seats, while Barisan and PAS received four and one seat, respectively.

Prior to the dissolution of the state assembly, the composition of the state assembly was as follows: Pakatan held 40 seats (PKR-19, DAP-15, Amanah-6), Barisan had five seats, Bersatu had four seats, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) had two seats, while PAS, Pejuang, and Warisan held one seat each. There was also one Independent representative.

Notably, the Batang Kali seat was declared vacant after the elected representative failed to attend the assembly sitting for over six months.

On July 5, the Election Commission (EC) announced that state elections in Selangor, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Negri Sembilan will be held simultaneously on August 12, with nomination day set for July 29 and early voting on August 8. – Bernama
