Voters in Kampung Laut near Pasir Pekan kicked off their day early by flocking to the SMK Kampung Laut voting station on Saturday (Aug 12).
Isman Daniel Abdul Razak, a 22-year-old hotel receptionist, and his friends woke up early to vote, anticipating shorter queues in the morning. After casting his vote, Isman, who came back to his hometown specifically for the election, is heading back to work in Kuantan, Pahang.
Zulkifli Muhammad, a 31-year-old contractor, expressed his desire for his preferred candidate in the Pasir Pekan seat to win and implement more facilities in the area, including clinics and schools. He also urged young voters to exercise their rights as citizens by casting their votes.
Malik Rafi, a 49-year-old father of three and a driver, voted for change, even though his chosen candidate may lack experience. He believes the candidate will quickly learn and lead effectively.
Retiree Rosli Ibrahim, 64, voted for a family member in a show of support, expressing confidence in his relative’s ability to represent the people well.
Housewife Nurazif Diana Mazlan, 29, voted for the candidate she believes will create more job opportunities in the constituency. Given the current difficulty in finding jobs, she hopes the elected representative will lend a helping hand.
Her younger sister, 18-year-old SPM graduate Wan Nur Fazlina Wan Fauzi, also voted for the same candidate as her sibling, hoping for easier entry into universities for local youths.
Wan Muhammad Wan Omar, a 76-year-old retiree, and his 70-year-old friend Maliki Muhammad were among the earliest voters at the polling station due to their regular morning prayers at the mosque. Wan Muhammad mentioned that he usually wakes up around 4:30 am to meet others at the mosque, while Maliki, still active, enjoys playing football with young people.
The Pasir Pekan seat is witnessing a direct contest between incumbent Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob of the Islamic party PAS and Pakatan Harapan candidate Zamakhsari Ibrahim.
