GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno set to contest in six out of the 40 State Legislative Assembly seats for the upcoming Penang State Election on August 12, according to State UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir (pic). Musa confirmed, “So far, Umno will be vying for six seats in Penang. We will defend our two seats in Permatang Berangan and Sungai Dua, which are part of the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary constituency. Additionally, we will also contest in Penaga and Bertam, part of the Kepala Batas parliamentary constituency. In the Nibong Tebal parliamentary constituency, we will field a candidate in Sungai Acheh, and in Balik Pulau (parliamentary constituency), we will compete in Teluk Bahang. This is the only seat Umno will be contesting on the island,” Musa told Bernama.
Musa added that Penang Umno is currently in the process of shortlisting candidates for the upcoming election. He plans to submit their names to the party leadership for further selection. “In the next two or three days, I will send three names for each seat to the leadership. This time, we aim to present new faces and young individuals, particularly from among Umno Youth. By fielding young candidates, we hope to bring about renewal and garner support from the voters. We encourage the Malay majority areas to support UMNO and the Unity Government parties in Penang. I firmly believe that Umno has the potential to win five seats,” he said.
The Election Commission (SPR) has recently announced that the simultaneous elections will be held on August 12 in six states, including Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Terengganu. Nominations for candidates will take place on July 29, with early voting scheduled for August 8. – Bernama
