PUTRAJAYA: The Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM) has announced plans to release district-level cost of living data to inform government policy and decision-making processes.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin (pic) explained that this report would help the public understand the cost of living in their areas while fostering a stronger connection between people and the data affecting their daily lives.

“Statistics are integral to people’s lives, and when government programmes are based on accurate and relevant data, the benefits directly reach the community,” he said during the National Statistics Day 2024 celebration and the soft launch of the Statistics Hub here on Sunday (Oct 20).

Mohd Uzir highlighted that National Statistics Day 2024 aims to emphasise the importance of statistics and the vital role of DOSM in delivering essential data services.

“We aim to encourage the public to embrace DOSM’s data, promoting the use of statistics to advance the nation’s progress and ensure they serve as a valuable tool for societal development,” he added.

Mohd Uzir also noted that the event marks DOSM’s 75th Diamond Jubilee, themed “Statistik Nadi Kehidupan (Statistics: The Pulse of Life)”.

To celebrate, DOSM has organised various activities to promote statistical awareness and recognise community contributions, including a Premier Forum, a Statistics Debate, fun runs, colouring competitions, and floral arrangement contests involving local communities.

“Since 2017, the event has grown, diversifying its activities while maintaining a strong impact on stakeholders.

“This initiative aligns with DOSM’s broader effort to foster a culture of statistics that supports national development and contributes to societal well-being, in line with Malaysia Madani’s aspirations,” he remarked in his speech.
