KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat was informed that studies are currently being conducted to build border walls at several of Malaysia’s land borders.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the areas under consideration include Sungai Golok in Kelantan, Pulau Sebatik in Sabah, and known rat lines in Padang Terap, Kedah.

She also mentioned that there are existing plans to construct border walls along the Malaysia-Thailand and Malaysia-Indonesia borders through the National Security Council.

“However, high construction costs and financial limitations have hindered the fulfilment of these plans,” she said in a written reply on Thursday (Oct 24).

Dr. Zaliha was responding to a question from Pang Hock Liong (Pakatan Harapan-Labis), who inquired about plans to build a wall along the Malaysia-Thailand border to combat smuggling and human trafficking.
