According to New York City police, six people were shot at a subway station in the Bronx, resulting in one fatality and five wounded individuals. No arrests have been made, and the condition of the injured individuals is unclear at this time. Reports from unnamed police sources indicate that the injuries sustained by the five individuals are not life-threatening. The most recent data reflects that crime on the New York subway system is rare, with approximately 3.8 million trips on an average weekday and a total of 570 felony assaults in 2023. Shootings are especially uncommon, as the 2022 incident where a man injured 10 people marked the first mass shooting attack on the subway system since 1984.
Another incident in May 2022 involved a man shooting and killing 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez on a Q train in what police described as an unprovoked attack. Passenger fears regarding subway safety increased during the early stages of the pandemic, when the subway crime rate spiked in early 2020 before returning to normal levels in 2021. Despite falling crime rates, the perception of danger among riders remains high.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former city police captain, has taken steps to reassure worried commuters by increasing the number of police officers in subway stations.
