(Reuters) – Eyewitnesses have reported that the Sudanese army launched a significant attack on the supply routes of its paramilitary rival on Sunday. This comes as the leader of the Sudanese army seemingly rejects any negotiated solution. The ongoing war, which started on April 15, has had devastating consequences for Sudan, including increased hunger, destruction of infrastructure, and the deaths of hundreds of civilians. On Sunday, the army carried out a series of airstrikes in the city of Omdurman. Military sources also mentioned that the army has deployed a large number of ground forces and heavy weaponry to ensure control over the city.

This strategic move aims to cut off a vital supply route to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an armed group that transports supplies from the Darfur region to Omdurman, and then across the Nile to Bahri and the capital city of Khartoum. Additionally, airstrikes have continued in southern Khartoum following reports from a local volunteer group claiming that 20 people were killed in an air raid the previous Saturday.

Despite multiple international initiatives attempting to negotiate a resolution and integrate the forces, the conflict remains unresolved. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who has been Sudan’s head of state since 2019, openly stated on Saturday in Kassala that the RSF would be defeated, announcing, “This war will only end with the end of the rebellion.”

General Burhan’s appearance in Kassala marks the first time he emerged from army headquarters since the war started. This follows intense battles over the army’s sole remaining stronghold in the capital. On Sunday, the RSF declared its control over a part of that stronghold, specifically the Armoured Corps base located in southern Khartoum.
