MELAKA: The fate of Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis within Umno will be decided by the party’s top leadership, according to Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He stated that a meeting of Umno supreme council members would soon take place to determine whether Muhammad Jailani’s resignation would be accepted. Ab Rauf further explained that Muhammad Jailani had submitted his resignation directly to the party’s disciplinary board, and that he was unaware of this development until afterwards.
Ab Rauf expressed his preference for the supreme council to make the final decision on Muhammad Jailani’s membership status, stating, “Let the supreme council make the decision.” These remarks were made during his presence at the opening of the Mustafa Jewellery outlet at a shopping mall in Melaka on Saturday, September 9th. He was responding to questions regarding Muhammad Jailani’s current standing with Umno following his submission of a resignation letter.
Muhammad Jailani was formerly a member of PKR, but he joined Umno in January 2021 after leaving PKR in 2016. During the March 2020 political crisis, Muhammad Jailani and three other assemblymen in the state left PKR, resulting in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan-led state government at that time. One month later, Muhammad Jailani was subsequently expelled from PKR. Previously, he served as a Melaka exco in charge of Tourism while Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali was the chief minister.
However, when Ab Rauf assumed the role of Chief Minister earlier this year, Muhammad Jailani was not included in the state exco line-up. In addition, he openly criticized Ab Rauf’s appointment and expressed his lack of support for him as the Chief Minister. Despite this, Muhammad Jailani was frequently seen attending events held by Perikatan Nasional, such as the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections.
On September 6th, it was reported in the media that Muhammad Jailani Khamis had sent a request to the Umno disciplinary board, asking to be dismissed from the party due to disciplinary actions taken against him by the board.
