PETALING JAYA: A man who attacked two women with a “Rambo knife” in the toilet of Surau Al-Ehsaniah Ahmadiah, Kelana Jaya, two weeks ago, has been charged in the Sessions Court here with two counts of attempted murder.

The part-time advertising worker, Mohammad Ferdaus Mashud, 46, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him before Judge Noor Ruzilawati Mohd Noor.

Mohammad Ferdaus was accused of attempting to murder mobile phone salesman Nurulain Azhar, 26, and religious school teacher Shaliza Talib, 52, by injuring both victims with a sharp object with the intent or knowledge that it could cause their deaths at the surau on Jalan SS 5A/10 at 1:30pm on Aug 9.

The charges were brought under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years if found guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor KS Rinisha Priyya did not offer bail, considering the severity of the crime committed by the accused.

“However, if the court wishes to grant bail to the accused, the prosecution requests that bail be set at RM50,000 for each charge along with additional conditions that the accused must report to the police station and surrender his passport to the court,” said Rinisha Priyya.

Lawyer Kailash Sharma, representing the accused, requested that the court grant bail on the grounds that his client has five children and is supporting his family.

“The guarantors are his ex-wife and his sister. My client also poses no flight risk and requests that bail be set at a reasonable amount,” he said.

The court also set Sept 23 for the next mention of the case.

It was previously reported that two women were injured, believed to have been attacked by a man with a “Rambo knife at the surau, and as a result of the attack, one victim suffered injuries to her head and abdomen, while the other had wounds on her arm and left hand. – Bernama
