KUCHING: The late Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud was buried at 2.20pm on Thursday (Feb 22) at his private residence in Demak Jaya alongside his first wife, Puan Sri Laila Taib, who passed away in 2009.
During the burial, Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah led a group of dignitaries in scattering flower petals over the grave, while a light drizzle fell.
Other dignitaries present included Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Brunei Prince Pengiran Muda Abdul Mateen Bolkiah, Taib’s wife Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib, and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Prior to the burial, Taib’s remains were laid in state at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex for the public to pay their last respects from 8am to 11.30am. The casket was then taken to Masjid Demak for prayers.
The route to the mosque was lined with twelve cannons from the 8th Royal Artillery Regiment, firing an 87-round salute in honor of Taib.
Taib, the former governor and chief minister of Sarawak, passed away on Wednesday (Feb 21) at the age of 87.
