In HUALIEN, Taiwan, the number of people injured in a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in eastern Taiwan surpassed 1,000 on Thursday. However, the death toll remained at nine, with 42 workers en route to a hotel in a national park still missing. The earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, struck on Wednesday morning as people were preparing for work and school, focusing on the rural and sparsely populated Hualien County.

While buildings in the capital Taipei also shook violently, damage and disruption there were minimal. Taiwan’s fire department reported that the number of injuries had risen to 1,038, with a total of 48 individuals missing, including the 42 hotel workers. The search for the missing hotel workers, who were on their way to Taroko Gorge, a national park, became a major focus for authorities. They planned to utilize drones and helicopters to search for them and provide supplies if they were located.

Rescue operations have been ongoing, with more individuals gradually being found and brought to safety. A helicopter successfully rescued six people who were trapped in a mining area on Thursday. The railway line to Hualien reopened earlier than expected, although a rural station north of Hualien city remains closed due to damage, according to the railway administration.

In Hualien city, where rescue efforts for trapped individuals have been completed, some residents opted to sleep outdoors due to the numerous aftershocks in the region. One resident identified as Yu, 52, sought refuge in a tent at a temporary shelter on a sports ground on Wednesday night, expressing fear of sleeping in her apartment, which she described as a “mess.” She stated, “The aftershocks were terrifying. It’s nonstop. I do not dare to sleep in the house.”
