TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan President-elect Lai Ching-te revealed on Wednesday that he had selected Cho Jung-tai, a previous chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), to serve as his premier.

The incoming premier and his team will not officially assume their duties until Lai’s inauguration on May 20.

According to Taiwan’s governmental structure, the president designates the premier, who then selects cabinet members with final approval from the president. The cabinet is responsible for implementing policies and proposing legislation.

In a statement to the press, Cho stated that he intends to unveil his cabinet appointees at a later time and emphasized his intention to collaborate with members across party lines.

Lai, who is currently serving as vice president, emerged victorious in the presidential election held in January, however, the DPP encountered a setback by losing its majority in parliament.

With the Kuomintang (KMT) securing the highest number of seats in the election, but falling short of a parliamentary majority, the remaining seats were claimed by the smaller Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), headed by former Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je.
