PETALING JAYA: The G25 group of eminent Malays has called for authorities to take strong action against individuals who make public statements that incite racial sensitivities. In response to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recent claim that Malaysia is a Malay country and promoting it as multiracial would be unconstitutional, the group emphasized the danger of such racist statements, as they can fuel the actions of extremist groups and exacerbate racial tensions. The G25 group expressed its full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent statement, advocating for the protection of all citizens and the future of Malaysians as a whole.
In a statement on Wednesday (July 12), the G25 group stated, “We urge the authorities to take stern actions against individuals, regardless of their political status, who make public statements that have the potential to incite racial sensitivities. The rule of law must prevail without exceptions.”
The group also encouraged the promotion and cultivation of inter-racial harmony, emphasizing the benefits that can be derived from a multi-cultural society. Highlighting Malaysia’s reputation as a model multi-racial society in the past, the group aspired for the country to regain this status. “We call for an immediate end to all provocative statements, such as the one made by the former prime minister, that can lead to racial tensions. Let us build a unified, fair, and just society for all races, upholding the rights of all citizens as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, and in accordance with the principles of the Rukun Negara,” the G25 group asserted.
The G25 group consists of experienced former civil servants and civil servants.
