Zanzibar, Tanzania, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) — According to the Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS)-Zanzibar, the number of international arrivals in Zanzibar increased to 70,186 in December 2023 from 57,296 in November. Bakar Khamis Kondo, Head of Services Provisions Division at OCGS-Zanzibar, revealed this increase at a monthly briefing for journalists.
Kondo stated that a total of 638,498 international tourists visited Zanzibar in 2023, up from 548,503 in 2022. He also noted that tourists from Europe continued to dominate the market, making up 72.3 percent of the total visitors in December. Furthermore, Italy was the leading country in terms of sending tourists, accounting for 12.3 percent of all arrivals, followed by France and Poland.
The majority of visitors (90.8 percent) arrived in Zanzibar by airplane, with the rest arriving by sea or ferries. Kondo also mentioned that males continued to dominate, constituting 64 percent of all visitors. On a positive note, he highlighted that tourists from emerging markets, such as Poland, India, Russia, Israel, China, and Ukraine, increased in December 2023.
