The implementation of generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT in the field of education raises numerous concerns about academic integrity. Teachers are at the forefront of this paradigm shift, but many of them feel overwhelmed by the introduction of this technology into their classrooms.

A survey conducted by Oxford University Press among 1,280 educators from various countries, including the UK, reveals that 49% of teachers do not feel adequately prepared for the impact of AI in education.

Although educators acknowledge the use of generative artificial intelligence by students for educational purposes, they express a lack of training on the matter. In fact, 54% of the surveyed teachers suspect that their students are utilizing such software to complete their homework.

This unsupervised utilization of AI is divisive among educators. Some fear that young individuals will become overly reliant on artificial intelligence in their academic lives, leading to a decline in critical thinking and the acquisition of knowledge. On the other hand, some see it as a valuable tool for learning.

Based on the survey by Oxford University Press, the latter viewpoint seems to prevail, as over 70% of respondents express optimism about the impact of AI in education.

“If used appropriately, it can only have a positive influence on student learning, catering to individualized lessons for different types of learners, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach,” stated an English language teacher in Italy, as reported by the study.

    Preparing for an ‘AI-enabled’ future

Nonetheless, the integration of AI in education necessitates careful consideration. Children and teenagers need to be taught how to make effective use of generative AI and understand that it serves as an additional source of knowledge, rather than a magical solution for achieving high grades.

Furthermore, it is crucial to encourage teachers to engage with this technology in their teaching practices, empowering them to better guide their students in a world where AI could become an everyday reality. After all, there is a strong possibility that the younger generation will extensively utilize artificial intelligence not only in education but also in their daily lives.

Many experts believe that this technology will revolutionize the job market, automating certain professions and rendering them obsolete. Consequently, it is essential to prepare the future workforce for this advancement before they enter their respective fields of work.

However, currently, teachers do not feel adequately equipped for this task. The teachers surveyed by Oxford University Press rate the current curricula and teaching methods at a five out of ten for effectively preparing children for a future with AI technology.

This is why Nigel Portwood, CEO of Oxford University Press, advocates for educational systems to be reformed to better incorporate the use of artificial intelligence.

“Our research shows that teachers and students are optimistic about the role of AI in education and recognize its potential for positively impacting learning. However, there are still many unanswered questions and potential risks associated with this advancing technology,” he stressed in a statement. – AFP Relaxnews
