KOTA KINABALU: Tragedy struck during a family outing in Sandakan district on Wednesday (Aug 2), as two relatives drowned near an abandoned pond. Sandakan OCPD ACP Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek stated that prior to the incident at around 11am, the victims, Amira Rolan, 19, and Muhamad Awira, 10, had been swimming with four other family members at Kg Bambu off Mile 7, Sandakan. “The two victims encountered difficulties while swimming in the abandoned pond,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 3). Fortunately, nearby villagers managed to retrieve them from the water. Unfortunately, the victims were pronounced dead at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan at 12.40pm. ACP Abdul Fuad stated that the case is currently being investigated as a Sudden Death Report. The victims’ remains have been returned to their families for burial.
