IPOH: A controversial Teluk Intan cultural festival where Chinese flags were waved did not have a police permit, says Comm Azizi Mat Aris.

The Perak police chief said investigations found that the organiser did not get a permit to hold the event, where several individuals were seen to be hoisting the Chinese flags during a procession held on Oct 24.

“We have called the organiser to record the statement.

“They will also be asked to call all the foreign participants, whom we believed are to be from China, to come forward to facilitate investigations,” he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 25).

“The matter is being investigated under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for holding a procession without permit, and Section 3 of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act for displaying a foreign emblem in a public area,” he added.

Comm Azizi had said this in response to a video of the procession, where the flag-waving incident took place, that has gone viral on social media.

He added that the Hilir Perak police had on Friday (Oct 25) at about 12.40am received a complaint from a local about the video.

Comm Azizi said the people should not take part in any illegal gatherings that can cause disturbance or threaten public order.

“Any individuals found guilty under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act can be fined up to RM10,000.

“Any parties that want to hold a gathering need to submit an application to the police 10 days before the event,” he added.
