(Reuters) – American player Danielle Collins expressed her satisfaction in achieving her goal for her final season on the WTA Tour after winning her first Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open on Saturday. The 30-year-old defeated fourth seed Elena Rybakina in a little over two hours to become the sixth American woman to secure victory in Miami.
Collins shared with reporters after claiming the third WTA title of her career, “I have always aimed to win every tournament I enter, but for my last year, I specifically targeted winning a Masters 1000 event. It was a significant goal for me and something I discussed with those close to me. I’m thrilled to have been able to focus on my best tennis.”
The former Australian Open runner-up, who announced her plans to retire from professional tennis in 2024 to start a family in January, was asked if she was reconsidering her decision. Collins responded, “No, I am not reconsidering. While I appreciate the support and desire from fans to see me continue playing, I have health challenges that make off-court aspects more challenging. I hope for understanding as this is a personal and emotional decision.”
Collins, a Florida native, acknowledged the local fans for their enthusiastic backing during the match, saying, “It was a joyous day for me on the court. The crowd’s support, regardless of the outcome, was unprecedented. It felt like playing in front of a sea of close friends; a memory I will always cherish.”
Reflecting on her accomplishment, Collins added, “I have managed to address some physical aspects necessary for peak performance and readiness. This tournament was a culmination of my efforts towards that goal, and I am pleased to have checked it off my list.”
