The Australian Open, an expanded Grand Slam, is set to start with Novak Djokovic beginning his title defence against qualifier Dino Prizmic. Many are predicting that Djokovic will claim his 11th title in just over two weeks, making it a record-extending victory. The absence of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal has left Djokovic as the last standing member of the ‘Big Three’.

Melbourne Park will host its first tournament in 25 years without Federer or Nadal. Fans who were hoping for a new champion to mark a new era may be disappointed, as Djokovic sets his sights on surpassing Margaret Court’s haul by claiming his 25th major title.

Djokovic, the world number one, conveyed his excitement, saying, “My favourite place, no doubt. The court where I’ve done great things and achieved my greatest Grand Slam results.”

Organisers have added an extra day to the tournament schedule to prevent late finishes that have been heavily criticised in previous years. However, Djokovic is expected to easily defeat Prizmic, and women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka will face qualifier Ella Seidel, potentially leading to a swift end to the opening day’s proceedings on Rod Laver Arena.

In the women’s field, Iga Swiatek, who has dominated the sport since the 2022 retirement of Ash Barty, will seek a fast start against 2020 winner Sofia Kenin. Swiatek ended 2023 strongly by reclaiming the top ranking from Sabalenka at the WTA Finals.

The Australian Open will also feature a strong women’s field, with former champions Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, and Caroline Wozniacki making a return following motherhood. Additionally, Coco Gauff, the newest entrant in the Grand Slam club, will mount a strong challenge following her U.S. Open triumph and her defense of her Auckland title.

In the men’s field, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will attempt to dethrone Djokovic, with Alcaraz aiming to continue his success on the biggest stage and Sinner looking for his first major victory. The Italian will begin his latest bid against Botic van de Zandschulp in Sunday’s opener on Rod Laver Arena.

The Australian Open will feature matches such as Maria Sakkari against Nao Hibino on the main showcourt, and Caroline Wozniacki against Magda Linette on Margaret Court Arena.
