According to Reuters, Daniil Medvedev expressed the need to perform at an exceptional level to defeat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final in California. Medvedev secured his spot in the final by overcoming Tommy Paul with a 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory in the semi-final on Saturday, setting the stage for a showdown with Alcaraz, whom he faced in last year’s final.

Having faced off four times recently, Alcaraz has emerged victorious in three encounters against Medvedev, boasting a 3-2 head-to-head record against the Russian player. Despite this challenge, Medvedev stated that he plans to approach the match with a similar mentality to his approach in this year’s Australian Open final, which saw him lose to Jannik Sinner.

Medvedev emphasized his determination by stating, “I knew last three times Sinner beat me, and I knew if I want to win I have to go there, give my all, 11 out of 10, 20 out of 10, whatever.” He also highlighted the mindset he brought into the match with Alcaraz at the U.S. Open, emphasizing his continued focus and determination on the court.

In addition, Medvedev revealed his intent not to solely focus on the Grand Slam events in his season, indicating a desire to excel in other tournaments as well. He expressed satisfaction with his performance at Indian Wells, which is the only hardcourt Masters 1000 title he has yet to secure, stating, “I want to try to win more than just Grand Slams. I want to try to play good in other tournaments.”

Reflecting on his approach, the former world number one emphasized his commitment to giving his best effort at all times, acknowledging the variability in his performance. Medvedev expressed hope for a strong performance in the final, indicating his intention to continue striving for excellence.

With the final set to take place soon, Medvedev’s focus and determination are evident as he prepares to face a challenging opponent in Alcaraz. The outcome of the match remains uncertain, but Medvedev’s resolve and competitive spirit are clear as he aims to secure victory in the prestigious tournament.

The report was compiled by Aadi Nair in Bengaluru, with editing by Tom Hogue, to provide insights into Medvedev’s mindset and approach ahead of the highly anticipated final against Alcaraz in Indian Wells.
