(Reuters) – Andy Murray will not be participating in the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters and Munich Open tournaments as he continues to recover from a severe ankle injury sustained during his recent exit from the Miami Open, his team announced on Friday.
The 36-year-old British tennis player injured his ankle during the deciding set of his match against Czech player Tomas Machac last Sunday, resulting in a 5-7 7-5 7-6(5) defeat in southern Florida. Murray had indicated that he would be taking an extended break from the sport due to ruptured ligaments.
“Following discussions with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has decided to skip the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open Munich,” a statement from his team confirmed.
The duration of Murray’s absence from competitive play remains uncertain as he continues to explore treatment options with his medical team.
“Naturally, this news is disappointing for Andy, but he remains determined to return to the court as soon as possible,” the statement added.
Murray, a former world number one and winner of three Grand Slam titles, made a comeback to the sport after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019. He previously mentioned that he did not plan to continue playing for an extended period beyond this summer, but was aiming to compete in another Olympics.
The tennis star had expressed his hopes of participating in the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros, which is scheduled to start on May 26. Wimbledon, where Murray has achieved victory twice, is set to begin on July 1, followed by the Paris Games later in the month.
The Monte Carlo Masters is slated to take place from April 7 to 14, while the Munich Open will be held from April 15 to 21.
