(Reuters) – Elena Rybakina managed to secure a hard-fought victory against Maria Sakkari in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on Tuesday, earning a spot in the last four for the second consecutive year. The former Wimbledon champion triumphed over Sakkari with a score of 7-5 6-7(4) 6-4 after a nearly three-hour battle on the court.
Reflecting on her victory, Rybakina expressed her exhaustion, stating, “I have no words because I’m so tired. It was such a tough battle. I got a little bit lucky with new balls, so it was easier to serve it out … now, I just need to recover.”
With her victory, Rybakina, who is currently ranked number four in the world, sets up a semi-final clash against three-time tournament champion and former world number one, Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka, a veteran player from Belarus, faced some challenges during her match against Yulia Putintseva, including a long stoppage due to a power outage in the first set. Despite the disruptions, Azarenka managed to emerge victorious with a score of 7-6(4) 1-6 6-3.
In her post-match comments, Azarenka expressed her satisfaction with the win, remarking, “Very happy with today’s win. It’s good to be back in the later stages of the tournament, it’s what I work for.”
The match between Azarenka and Putintseva featured a tight first set tiebreak, during which Azarenka saved three set points before eventually clinching the set. Putintseva fought back in the second set to force a decider, but Azarenka’s consistency and skill ultimately proved too much for her opponent.
Rybakina will have to bring her A-game once again in her upcoming semi-final clash against Azarenka, who is known for her powerful game and strategic play on the court.
Azarenka’s experience and determination were evident in her match against Putintseva, where she stayed focused and composed even during challenging moments, showcasing her strong mental fortitude.
The semi-final showdown between Rybakina and Azarenka promises to be an exciting and competitive match, with both players eager to secure a spot in the final and vie for the Miami Open title.
As the tournament progresses, tennis fans can expect thrilling matches and fierce competition as the top players battle it out on the court for glory and victory.
