(Reuters) – Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka believes that the upcoming season will not be any easier despite her success in the 2023 Grand Slams. The world number two expressed confidence in her fearless approach to handle any challenges that come her way.

In the past year, Sabalenka secured her first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park and was the runner-up to Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open, briefly holding the top spot in the rankings. She also reached the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Speaking to reporters in Brisbane as she gears up for the Australian Open starting on Jan 14, Sabalenka acknowledged the difficulty of defending a title, saying, “It’s not going to be easy this season.” She emphasized the importance of not putting herself under pressure and preparing as best as she can for the challenge ahead.

Sabalenka, a favorite to win the Australian Open, expressed that her courageous mindset will once again play a crucial role. “I accepted the fact that I can lose, that everyone can go there and beat me if I’m not bringing my best tennis,” she said, adding that this acceptance gives her more belief and calmness during crucial moments.

She emphasized that her mindset allows her to focus on doing her best in every match and gives her huge chances to win, even acknowledging the possibility of dropping in rankings or losing points.

Despite the emotional nature of Grand Slam tournaments, Sabalenka stated that she has done a great job in preparing for the season and is ready to face whatever comes her way.

“I did an amazing job. It wasn’t easy to do. It’s not going to be easy this season,” Sabalenka told reporters on Saturday in Brisbane as she prepares for the Australian Open beginning on Jan 14.

“Just having this thought in the back of your mind, actually having a title to defend, makes it actually not easy.”

“I’m trying not to put myself under pressure. I’m trying to prepare myself as good as I can. It’s not easy, especially with the Grand Slams. It can get super emotional. One thing can change everything.”

“But I think I did a great job in the pre-season and I’m ready to do it.”
