(Reuters) – Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked as the world number two in women’s tennis, spoke out about her recent unexpected loss to Emma Navarro in the fourth round of the Indian Wells tournament. Despite this setback, Sabalenka remains optimistic and is focusing on the upcoming Miami tournament as a chance to return to top form.
Earlier this year, Sabalenka secured her second Grand Slam title by winning the Australian Open. However, her performance in Dubai was disappointing, as she was defeated in the second round by Donna Vekic. The defeat to Navarro in California further added to her struggle in recent tournaments.
In a press conference, Sabalenka acknowledged that she did not feel her best during the Indian Wells event and mentioned that she and her team are working on improving her game. She is determined to fight for the title in Miami and hopes to showcase her best tennis in the tournament.
Originally from Minsk, Belarus, Sabalenka now resides in Miami and considers the upcoming tournament in Florida as her ‘home’ event. She expressed her excitement for Miami and aims to surpass her quarter-final finish from last year’s competition.
“I love this tournament and I’d say I feel at home because I stay at home there. Such a nice tournament. I didn’t have chance to play really well there,” Sabalenka stated, reflecting on her previous performances in Miami.
Despite her recent setbacks, Sabalenka remains positive about her abilities and is determined to capitalize on her success at the Australian Open. She emphasized her hunger for victories and her commitment to delivering her best tennis on the court.
“It’s not like I won Australian Open at the beginning of the year and the year is done. I’m always hungry for wins and always want to do well and bring my best tennis,” Sabalenka affirmed.
Looking ahead, Sabalenka is focused on continuous improvement and aims to make the current year the best of her career. She is dedicated to working hard and hopes to look back on this year as a successful one by the end of the season.
