(Reuters) – World number one Aryna Sabalenka expressed her concerns about the newly-constructed tennis courts in Cancun, Mexico, where the season-ending WTA Finals are taking place. In an Instagram post, Sabalenka stated that she did not feel safe playing on the courts and blamed the WTA for the situation. Despite the conditions, she managed to defeat Maria Sakkari 6-0 6-1 in the opening day of group play.

Sabalenka expressed her disappointment with the WTA and the overall experience at the WTA Finals. She claimed that the organization did not meet the expected level of organization for the prestigious event. She also highlighted the lack of safety on the court and the inconsistent bounce, revealing that players were unable to practice on the court until the day before the tournament started.

The Estadio Paradisus, where the tournament is being held, was completed just before the start of the event. It features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world. In response to the concerns raised, the WTA stated in an email to Reuters that they were pleased to host the Finals in Cancun for the first time and that great effort was put into preparing the stadium on time, despite weather challenges.

Sabalenka clarified that her issue was solely with the WTA and expressed her appreciation for the local tournament organizers, as well as the individuals who built the court at the last minute. She made it clear that her frustrations were not directed towards them or the Mexican fans.
