Marketa Vondrousova, the Wimbledon champion, suffered a shocking loss in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday. Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska outperformed her with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Seventh seed Vondrousova had to withdraw from the warm-up tournament in Adelaide due to a hip issue and found herself 5-0 down in the opening set against Yastremska, who saw an opportunity for a major upset.
Vondrousova, 24, managed to score a few points late in the first set, but Yastremska’s strong performance gave her too much momentum to overcome.
Yastremska, ranked 93rd in the world, broke early in the second set as Vondrousova continued to make errors. The 23-year-old held her ground and secured the victory.
